  1. In the 16th Century European traders appeared and in 1867 Britain
  2. established control.  Malaysia was created on September 16, 1963. 
  3. Originally included in the new country were Singapore, North
  4. Borneo and N.W. Borneo.  Singapore was separated in 1965.  A
  5. monarch is elected by a council of hereditary rulers of the
  6. Malayan states every five years.  Abundant natural resources have
  7. assured prosperity and foreign investment has aided
  8. industrialization.                     @
